The Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management continues to remind residents that dangers still exist in the wake of Hurricane Irene. OEM officials also caution drivers about traveling on flooded roadways because the water may be deeper than they think it is. Motorists should be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize flood dangers, downed wires and other hazards.

The Monmouth County Transportation Council, an advisory group to the Monmouth County Planning Board, is hosting a Transportation Summit May 17 at the Young Auditorium in Bey Hall, Monmouth University. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.
May is a superb month to visit Monmouth County: the days are warmer, the beaches aren’t crowded, parks are buzzing with activities plus the out of doors is calling you to explore. There’s a lot to do and see before summer’s arrival.
Weekend in Old Monmouth returns again with 40 historic sites throughout Monmouth County opening their doors to visitors interested in local history. Hours for most sites are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 and from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, May 1. “Forty historic sites will participate in the third Weekend in Old Monmouth event,” said Freeholder Lillian G. Burry, liaison to the county’s Historical Commission, coordinator of the weekend event. “Independent and local historic sites are generally operated independently of one another, but this special tour project synchronizes the hours of operation so history buffs can walk or drive to many of the county’s richest historic places and enjoy them in the spring.”
The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders has announced that the fall Monmouth County surplus auction generated $310,802, bringing the combined total of the county’s online surplus property auctions to $1,922,283.
The county began conducting its surplus property auctions completely online in 2008.
The Monmouth County Fire Academy graduated 32 volunteers from the Firefighter I program at a ceremony held August 3. Members of Class No. 87 attended weekend classes at the Monmouth County Fire Academy in Howell and completed 164 hours of course work over 24 sessions. They received training in rescue, fire extinguishment, hazardous materials response, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, electrical safety, and care of hoses, ladders and other equipment.
As the mosquito season enters into its peak period Monmouth County residents should take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites and eliminate backyard mosquito habitats that allow for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as the West Nile virus.
Whether you like horseracing, crab cakes or movies on the beach, August has it all. Beaches, concerts, food, sports, horses, shopping, cars and other recreational opportunities populate August’s 31 days, and Monmouth County’s tourism calendar is overflowing with fun.
It was a sad day this past week when CMX, Inc., a Monmouth County based engineering firm announced that it would shutting down operations on May 11th. Founded in 1968 by Howard M. Schoor, the engineering firm employees 196 in its Manalapan office, all of whom will be out of work in a little over a month.
