The New Jersey Shore has a number of destinations that locals and travelers frequent for Halloween festivities, however the Asbury Park boardwalk shined brightly on the October 31st. Families from around the state celebrated the Fall holiday by dressing in fun costumes and enjoyed the atmosphere (and candy), given to all patrons. Oceanfront stores and boardwalk restaurants stayed open and handed special treats out to kids visiting the city. For visitors who enjoy traditional Halloween activities combined with beach fun, this was the perfect event.
This is the second in our City Spotlight series, which features different cities throughout the New Jersey shore region. Incorporated in 1874, the city currently boasts a population of nearly 18,000 residents along with a rich cultural history. In fact, Asbury Park has always been widely known for its rich musical history. It was ranked the sixth best beach in New Jersey in the 2008 Top 10 Beaches Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium.
Asbury Park is a city in the midst of a cultural, political, and economic revival, that is drawing interest from local and national artists, developers, and of course visitors. And now the city is almost back and has become a must visit destination of Jersey Shore towns.
This morning marks the 75 year anniversary of The Morro Castle disaster. If you are not familiar with the Moro Castle, it was the famed ship that ran aground just north of Convention Hall in Asbury Park. The crash was caused by a fast-moving fire that started on the lower level of the ship and quickly spread throughout the vessel, killing 137 passengers and crew members.
