No matter what the calendar says, summer does not end on Labor Day in Monmouth County. There is plenty of warm-weather fun to be found during September. The beaches are open, farm markets are bountiful, free concerts are still in parks – just as though it were the height of the summer season. A few twists have been added to the mix: beach bonfires, the Jazz and Wine Festival, flea markets and a street fair.
If you love visiting historic sites in the Jersey Shore, you will enjoy the Sea Girt Lighthouse. On March 2, 1889, Congress approved $20,000 for the establishment of a lighthouse in the vicinity of Squan Inlet. It would become the last live-in lighthouse to be built on the Atlantic Coast.

The Monmouth County Fire Academy graduated 32 volunteers from the Firefighter I program at a ceremony held August 3. Members of Class No. 87 attended weekend classes at the Monmouth County Fire Academy in Howell and completed 164 hours of course work over 24 sessions. They received training in rescue, fire extinguishment, hazardous materials response, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, electrical safety, and care of hoses, ladders and other equipment.
54 people donated blood at Monmouth County’s summer blood drive last week in an effort to help the Central Jersey Blood Center meet the late summer need for blood donations. “Every single unit is treasured and appreciated,” said Karen Moore, account manager with the Central Jersey Blood Center. “We are into our slow period of time with donations, and we are always looking for opportunities to increase awareness and our blood supply.”
